Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease
What’s the difference between Alzheimer’s and early-onset Alzheimer’s?
Early-Onset Alzheimer’s is exactly what it says: Alzheimer’s that occurs in people younger than 65. It’s uncommon: only about 5-10% of all Alzheimer’s cases occur before age 65. Most early-onset begins in the 40s and 50s, but it can happen as young as 30. The signs and symptoms are exactly the same, no matter when it begins. The other important thing to know is that about 13% of early-onset AD cases have a genetic cause: in other words, these cases were inherited from a parent. As for the rest, including late-onset, no one yet knows the cause, but research is making progress.
